Last year, I did a trip back in time to revisit Topeka Kansas, where I spent an exchange year back in 1989. I found my old house, and had a few other adventures, but then wanted to go and explore some of the local attractions. I can’t say that I found a lot, but one of the local attractions pointed out to me was the Combat Air Museum, built in memory of a large airforce base that used to be in the area. They have quite a selection of old planes, with exhaustive explanations of the background. Veteran volunteers seem very eager to help and tell you stories about every aspect of the museum. Some of the planes saw real action in all possible US involved wars in the world wars, and there are replica planes of the first world war.
I’m not a big plane fan, or a history buff, and still it was interesting to take a look. I came close to closing time, so an hour was just perfect to take it all in.
What’s to see? Here’s a bit to give you a feel for the place…
Location:
A good way to spend an hour in Topeka and get a bit of the regional vibe and learn about flight and air combat history.
