To balance the last two visits to contemporary arts museums (Boston & Taipei), here’s a wonderful arts museum in Chicago. I visited this museum following a very pleasant and informative skyscraper architecture tour that left from across the street from the arts institute. From that tour, the first thing a visitor notices about the museum is just how lovely it looks from the outside, situated next to the impressive Millennium Park.
While I was visiting, the museum was featuring a special Roy Lichtenstein exhibition which was for members only, which I only bring up to show that the boundaries between contemporary and non-contemporary museums is not as clear cut as you’ve often think…
That aside, you can expect the best of the best of the arts world.
If it’s the amazing Chagall windows…
Or Chagall’s paintings, which always surprise me with their overly Jewish symbolism…
Picasso…
The thing that’s interesting about this specific painting, explained to me by the museum tour if that you can see Picasso’s reuse of a previous painting, the reason being that he was simply too poor to buy new materials… here, see if you notice the women in the former painting just above this homeless person’s head (if not, move your head, or click to zoom)…
More of his works…
More? how about Dali? I’ve yet to meet anyone who doesn’t like Dali…
Other than the classics and well known there are many other highlights suggested by the museum I knew very little about prior to my visit…
There’s also a section devoted to "American Art"…
and the more contemporary pieces that became classics over time …
A must visit in Chicago. Don’t miss it.
