The Hong Kong Design Institute is one of the most interesting buildings I’ve seen in Hong Kong, and just next to my apartment complex at Tiu Keng Leng at the Tseun Kwan O area in eastern Hong Kong. It’s devoted to art and design and the only time I visited was to sit down in the Pacific Coffee and work, but about a month ago I noticed that there was a new exhibition running as part of the Design in Motion exposition taking places all over Hong Kong.
But first, the building…
Not exactly what you’d expect from space hungry ultra-expensive real estate Hong Kong.
It gets even better when you go to the roof…
What’s the exhibition about? the official website writes :
Belgian Spirit is a joint initiative of the three Belgian regions Brussels, Flanders and Wallonia to promote Belgian fashion, design and architecture in Asia. Belgian architect and designer Charles Kaisin showcases various design product and installation arts, all linked by two themes: motion and recycling. Selected exhibits are grouped under various sub-themes to illustrate the creation of new design through the innovative and recycling use of materials in relation to contemporary and sustainable design. This exhibition is kindly supported by Hong Kong Arts Development Council.

So, we’ve got a bit of odd design…
And a bit of fashion…
As it usually is with fashion and design, I understand very little about it, but it’s intriguing and very pleasant on the eyes. To those who keep claiming that not much is happening in Hong Kong in terms of creative design, this is just a quick glimpse into one area that takes fashion and design very seriously. If you’re in the area, and want to see a different style of architecture and perhaps visit a gallery or two, drop in for a visit.
